Intermodal Terminal Solutions - Consulting
Within the UK the move to intermodal transport is being facilitated by the development of new services and, crucially, a new generation of intermodal terminals.
In today's uncertain economic climate the need for a particular mix of skills and expertise ranging from demand forecasting and needs assessment through to terminal planning, operations design and service management is ever more important.
Getting the numbers right is crucial and we believe we have a powerful and comprehensive offering of skills that are current to the market, whether it is setting out the initial business case for a terminal or reviewing current operational and commercial arrangements.
Our Team
Our Intermodal Team combines individuals with commercial, operational planning, design and implementation expertise. We aim to offer the best mix of recognised experience with leading edge techniques.
Over the past 10 years our team has assisted developers like Burford with the submission of detailed needs and operations advice for a strategic railfreight terminal, were part of the team that converted the Jaguar Halewood plant to rail and are currently advising two major developers on intermodal terminal developments. We have advised B&Q on rail connected warehousing and British Waterways, Crossrail and TfL on rail road and water connected distribution facilities.

Selected Projects
Jaguar Halewood
Our team members managed the joint venture company that obtained a £5m freight facilities grant and designed and
built the new rail connected facility at Halewood.
Rail Connected Warehousing
Commissioned by B&Q to assess the feasibility of reinstating disused rail facilities at the former colliery site at Manton
near Worksop, Nottinghamshire.
Trafford Interchange
Commissioned by Burford Group as Rail advisors part of a Joint Venture to develop a strategic rail freight terminal on the
site of the Shell chemical works at Carrington. Our work has included the design of the rail layout, dealing with capacity
issues, gauge enhancement and timetabling. The project was taken through the planning process by initial adoption into
the Unitary Development Plan. PBA assisted in the process and provided expert witness evidence to the planning
inspectorate.
London Riverside Sustainable Freight Study
Transport for London and the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation have retained us to comprehensively
study opportunities to develop a sustainable strategic industrial location in east London. The first stage of the work
examined how rail and water could be effectively exploited to support the logistics services required by the capital. We
are currently carrying out the second stage to assess the feasibility of a range of infrastructure proposals and
interventions.
South African Intermodal System
We worked with Mott Macdonald for Transnet to design new intermodal terminals working with engineers and terminal
simulation experts to come up with appropriate terminal designs.
Tri Modal Distribution - Confidential
Currently reviewing the business case for a tri modal distribution centre in the UK involving the provision of road, rail and water facilities to support an extensive distribution centre.
Portbury Branch Study
Carried out market research into freight demand for the re-opening of a branch line to serve the port for bulk and forest
products, and the transport of cars. The work assisted the Port and RailTrack in taking forward plans for the £15 million
investment in rail facilities
Ford Motor Company
A major logistics and environmental planning exercise involving the development of
various scenarios for the movement of vehicles, the review of distribution systems, and
the master planning of Dagenham site to meet Ford's future needs.
